My Food Story
Power of Asking why...
I am an Army Brat. My mom raised my brother and I for many months on her own as my dad traveled with the Army. I was born in Germany, my brother was born in Japan, and we lived in Hawaii and Maryland. At the beginning, my parents were not good cooks and with a tight budget we grew up eating things that were cheap, fast, and easy. Hamburger and Tuna Helper, Froot Loops, Honey Nut Cheerios, Ramen, Kraft Mac & Cheese, Instant Spuds, hot dogs. Fast Food was a reward for my brother and I, especially during Lent where it was a special treat on Fridays to get the Filet-O-Fish sandwich. That’s what I knew. And it tasted good.
My favorite snack was a slice of Kraft American Cheese (aka plastic cheese). I would fold it into tiny little squares as much as I could and savor each little square, one by one.
It wasn't until I was in middle school when my dad started watching Food Network cooking shows. My mom and dad started to explore food and it was delicious! It became an event. I watched and learned how to make delicious food from scratch. I was amazed and my passion for food was born. My mom cooked my senior prom dinner for my friends and me (including my favorite: kaesespaetzle). Thanksgiving became my favorite holiday and still is to this day.
In 2009, I had my first daughter and I started looking into her first foods. And I made the choice that all parents have to make- do I make the food or do I buy it?
This is when I watched Food, Inc. I remember sitting on my couch in Port Chester, NY watching it with my jaw to the floor. The wool had been pulled over my eyes for my entire life! I just had a baby inside of me for 9 months. What had I been eating that she was subjected to?! Cattle, chickens stuffed into confined space and fed antibiotics and hormones to keep them alive with no light, no movement. I was horrified. We aren’t only what we eat, but what we eat eats. It all matters.

Not. My. Children.
My eyes were opened. I became hyper-aware. This is what started it all.
I had to make a decision knowing what I knew now. I could ignore it and pretend it didn’t exist or do something about it. Enough was enough. I needed to make a change. But how?
One step at a time.
I started looking at the food in my kitchen. Looking at labels and realizing I was eating ingredients I couldn’t pronounce. Chemicals like Butylated Hydroxytoluene were no longer acceptable in my food.
Food is either fuel or the slowest form of poison.
Most of the bags and boxes in my pantry were chemically-processed foods. I started replacing those things with foods with ingredients I could pronounce. Actually reading the labels.
I became obsessed with asking “Why?”
How many decisions do we make out of habit because we have always done it? I wasn’t ok with that anymore.

There are so many companies out there pushing their weight-loss programs that you may find it hard to decipher which one is best, or if they even work at all. The problem lies in the fact that many programs are based on starvation or portion control, but they never address what KINDS of food you should be eating. A quick-fix will never work. It's all about creating a healthy lifestyle.
