I got my 1st physical in years.
I don't know about you, but I try to avoid going to the doctor as much as possible and I've done a pretty good job of that. The only reason I even went is because we moved and I figured I needed to figure out who my primary care physician is. I was also curious about my blood results.
Have you had your blood drawn recently?
I wanted to know what effect our whole foods, plant-based diet had on my health. So here it is for the world to see! If I am going to talk the talk, I need to be able to walk the walk, right? Up until these results I was not taking any vitamin. These results are a direct impact of my food choices and overall lifestyle.
Moral of the story: Every single category is in range except Vitamin D.
This was another confirmation that what I am doing for me and my family and recommending to my clients is backed by science. But back to the Vitamin D. After doing some research, it turns out that the whole Vitamin D deficiency buzz is not just medical hype.
We aren't aboriginal humans running around naked in full sun.
Yikes! There's a mental picture for you...This is precisely why we are Vitamin D deficient. Not to mention the toxic sunscreen that we are slathering all over ourselves and our kids, but I digress. Our bodies do not get the daily requirement of Vitamin D from food. (Fun fact: mushrooms are a source of Vitamin D, but most in the grocery store are grown in the dark, so there goes that.) We can only get the daily requirement naturally from being in the sun. Most of us are not in the sun long enough and if we are, we put sunscreen on which blocks our body's production of Vitamin D.
Why do we need Vitamin D?
Vitamin D has been shown to increase immunity, support arteries, and increase bone health. If you want to dig into it a little more and not just take my word for it, here is a source of more scientific information.
Not all vitamins are created equal. The vitamins that you find in the grocery stores are typically encased in a petroleum-based coating which prevents your body from absorbing the vitamin. Essentially, you are peeing out 70% of your vitamin and wasting your money.
I always look for vegan or vegetarian brands because in addition to petroleum, companies put other nasty things in what we consume every day if we aren't paying attention. Ingredients matter for all things that go in and on our bodies. It all has a direct affect on our health.
Which one do I take?
Here's to your health!
