Dirt to Doorstep®

I love a good farmers market! Thankfully, Richmond is full of them. I love going to the South of the James Market to pick up veggies, a beautiful bouquet of flowers, and let the kids pet all the doggies {and devour a fresh donut}.

5 Key Areas of Health

1.   Eat Clean

2.   Increase Nutritional Intake

3.   Eliminate Allergenic, Addictive, & Acidic Foods

4.   Balance Blood Sugar

5.   Support Elimination Organs

Here’s what I know:

Due to the overabundance of pre-packaged and fast food, many people today are overweight yet malnourished. They carry toxic fat while their bodies are starving for real nutrition. This condition can be reversed by eating whole foods and supplementing with nutrients to fill in possible deficiencies.

It is a good idea to focus on eating organic, non-GMO foods free of preservatives, additives, pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, artificial flavors and all other toxins. Food is either fuel or poison. Simply put, anything that can’t be used as energy in the body is a toxin. Organic fruits and vegetables contain up to 40% more antioxidants than those conventionally grown.

What do we do with this information?

Buying local produce helps us tackle four out of the five key areas of health. What happens when I can’t get to a farmers market? I would normally opt for Kroger’s organic section…

Enter: Seasonal Roots!

They point out that most grocery store produce comes from far away and is selected for high yield and long shelf life, not for flavor or nutrition. By the time it reaches the grocery store, it’s typically a week old and well on the way to losing whatever nutrients and flavor it had.

Seasonal Roots partners with local family farmers whose farming practices follow the old school definition of organic. That means that most of their farmers have a low-to-no-spray policy. They use sustainable methods to grow their food as nature intended, and often rely on their land's natural biodiversity to keep pests in check. Many of their farmers also abide by the standards of USDA Organic. You’ll know who your farmers are and where they are located.
