And ice cream. And Thin Mints. And Frosties. And the occasional donut. As a health coach, that might shock you or give you some peace of mind...
When I meet someone for coffee and I enjoy my chocolate chip cookie from Panera (mmm....pictured above), I often get some weird looks. "But you always talk about eating healthy?" Yes, I do. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy a delicious dessert every once in a while. I make my living by teaching people how food affects them. How to make healthier choices.
In my past life, I would eat dessert multiple times a day, every day. Ice cream every night. The difference now is that I know how sugar affects the body. I know it is 8 times more addicting than cocaine and our body becomes dependent on it. Sugar chemically changes the brain so that we physically crave it.
I practice what I preach and I am intentional when I eat a cookie. I am not going to go through life not enjoying a dessert. Let's be clear, I'm not the person that will eat dessert first, but I can always save room for some tiramisu. I am an equal opportunity eater. I love food.
In the end it's about balance. It's about knowing how to make healthier choices. It's about enjoying the things you love; the sweet things in life. It's about progress not perfection.
